ProTrump’s legal advocacy nonprofit, America First Legal (AFL), is asking the Federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to request evidence of citizenship for all federal voter registration applicants after the president’s efforts have been blocked by courts.

The AFL filed a petition with the EAC on Wednesday, appealing to the agency to amend its national voter registration form to provide applicants with one of the following documents proof of U.S. citizenship:

The move, following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, was titled “Maintaining and Protecting the integrity of American elections,” and in addition to other provisions related to the ban on non-citizen voting, it sought to force the EAC to require evidence of citizenship requirements for the national voter registration form.

A US judge partially blocked Trump’s election integrity order from taking power. Is that legal?

Trump’s move has been criticized by critics who argued that it is already illegal for non-US citizens to vote in federal elections. However, hopeful voters may not need to provide evidence of citizenship, and may be self-attesting alone.

Part of Trump’s March executive order called on the EAC to amend the national voter registration form, requiring all states to comply with and use it, was ultimately blocked by multiple federal judges following a lawsuit challenging Trump’s authority.

In AFL’s petition to the EAC, the group argues that the injunction is “completely based on the separation of principles of power” despite the legal challenges and the resulting temporary injunction from federal judges still being awarded.

“The executive order has used expenditure rights to ensure the EAC is enforcing the law by requiring state election officials to require evidence of citizenship,” said Daniel Epstein, vice president of America First Legal, further clarified to Fox News Digital. “What we’re doing is to force changes to the forms that the EAC distributes and have the ability to enforce it in court.”

Fox News Digital requested comment from the EAC but did not receive a response.
