After some recent rains, the main highway to Yosemite National Park has been closed indefinitely due to rock slips, state officials said.
During route 140, about two miles between Brisburg and El Portal, the El Portal that follows the park was closed after rainy weather dropped rocks on narrow canyon roads, SFGate reported.
Over the past few weeks, California has been hit by repeated storms that have dumped its feet in the mountains and created streams of debris and rocks on the state highways.
Yosemite Valley recorded 7.38 inches of rain during last week’s storm, but El Portal recorded 6.48 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
In a Facebook post, the California Highway Patrol proposed that drivers use state routes 41 and 120 as alternatives to enter Yosemite.
Caltrans spokesman Brian Hooker said the slide area is located in a narrow, narrow canyon on the way to El Portal and Yosemite, making it difficult to deal with slides of debris.
“The slides covering both the east and west lanes of Blissburg forced the Cartran maintenance and highway operation crew to further assess the size of the Debris slide to reach the east side of the slide using the state’s Route 41 as a detour through Yosemite National Park,” Hooker said in an email.
A cleanup timeline was not provided as crew members had to access the hillside and clear out the debris. For real-time road information, download the Caltrans QuickMap app.
