The Franklin Fire continues to smolder in Malibu’s “very dangerous” terrain, but officials say cooler temperatures this weekend will make it easier to extinguish the fire.
The Franklin Fire had minimal growth Friday at 4,037 acres since it started late Friday night on Malibu Canyon Road near Malibu Creek State Park, according to CalFire. . Contains 35%.
Evacuation orders and warnings were quickly issued for several communities on and adjacent to Malibu Canyon Road. However, some residents chose to stay home and protect their homes and the homes of their neighbors.

Pepperdine University, whose campus is located at Malibu Canyon Road and Pacific Coast Highway, was not evacuated, but local elementary, middle, and high schools were closed through the weekend.
Officials said Saturday morning that a total of 19 structures were destroyed and another 23 damaged. In an update, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detailed that of the 19 structures destroyed, eight were single-family homes and 11 were outbuildings.
Of the 23 buildings damaged, 14 were single-family homes, one was an apartment complex, four were commercial buildings, and four were annex buildings.

More than 1,700 firefighters have been dispatched to the incident, which achieved some containment later this week after a rapid spread due to winds on Tuesday.
CalFire says further containment should be achieved this weekend as favorable weather conditions continue in the area.

“The fire continues to smolder in steep and extremely dangerous terrain…Aerial suppression operations in these areas have successfully brought the fire under control,” officials said in a situation update released at 5:50 a.m. Saturday. stated in the information. “The cool weather, high humidity and lack of strong winds are aiding firefighting efforts.”
