Democratic New York City mayoral candidate and self-proclaimed socialist Zoran Mamdani faces criticism of comments made at the American Young Socialist Conference, which urged attendees not to compromise on goals such as “grabing the means of production.”
During her appearances that were part of the 2021 YDSA Winter Conference and later newly elected to the New York State Legislature, Mamdani lamented that many socialist principles remain outside the political mainstream.
“If you’re currently talking about cancelling student debts, and talking about Medicare for everyone, these are issues with a popular support ground swell across the country,” Mamdani said in a video to participants at the conference. “But there are other issues that we firmly believe in, whether it’s BDS, whether it’s the ultimate goal of seizing the means of production, whether it’s the ultimate goal of not having the same level of support in this moment.”
New York Mayor’s Hopeful Zohran Mamdani slams capitalism on CNN and quotes MLK to defend socialism
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is raising his hand with Pastor Al Sharpton, founder and president of the National Action Network at a campaign event at the Harlem House of Justice in New York City on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Mamdani continued to say that not compromise on these less popular ideas is “critical” despite his public claims this week that he is “not a communist.”
“It’s important, and how we organize, how we set us up – you know, we set our work and priorities, and we don’t meet for a moment, and we can not only see that people are ready, but we can see that we are doing these things in tandem,” Mamdani continues in his speech at his meeting. “For us, it’s important to organize the people they’re seeing and for the right and the right thing, and because it’s important to ensure that over time we can bring people to that issue.”
On Monday, the video that Mamdani spoke at the 2021 YDSA conference began to play rounds on social media.
Former NYC mayor Bill de Blasio says there is “a lot of exaggeration” in the horror of Mamdani
“The nomenclature of Mamdani’s socialist is not a joke or aspiration,” billionaire Bill Ackman said in response to a video that has begun to appear on social media. “It’s a business plan for the move he’s leading and for now I’m going to win. Don’t rely on my summary. Listen to him as he speaks his words.”
“The mum dani smiles like a crocodile and says his ultimate goal is to elect more socialists and grab the means of production,” President Donald Trump’s emperor of code and artificial intelligence added in response to the video. “The Democrats have become Luigi’s left, Tesla Terrorism and the Crocodile Communist Party.”
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign to respond to these criticisms, but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Last week, Trump personally criticized Mamdani. Mamdani criticized New York Governor Andrew Cuomo earlier this month as “a 100% communist madman.”
“It’s finally happened, Democrats have crossed the line,” Trump wrote. “We had radical left-handers before, but this is a bit ridiculous,” Trump doubled the communist claim this week in an interview with Fox Business, adding that if elected, Mamdani is either “action” or risking his city losing federal funds.

In response to Trump’s criticism of being a “communist,” Mamdani directly rebutted his claims to NBC News over the weekend.
“No, I’m not,” Mamdani replied when NBC’s Kristen Welker asked for a point blank. “I had already had to start to get used to the fact that the President wanted to distract me from what I was fighting for, about how I looked, how I sound, where I came from, and who I was ultimately.
“When we talk about my politics, you know, I call myself a democratic socialist in many ways, inspired by the words of the doctor. [Martin Luther] A few decades ago, the king said, “We must call it democracy, it is democratic socialism, and there must be a better distribution of wealth for all God’s children in this country.”
