The 33-year-old man faces the potential for life in prison for violent rape attempts of a 63-year-old woman, and attacked a toddler and a home robbery later last month, officials said.

The horrifying February 27 incident unfolded just before 12:30pm in the Sawtel area of West Los Angeles.

In a news release, prosecutors with the LA County District Attorney’s Office said Ishmeil Bangala will enter the apartment of a 63-year-old woman whom he is reportedly sexually assaulted after he attacked a three-year-old child inside one apartment.

Witnesses said they were nude during the violent ordeal, Bangala was separated from the woman by a group of construction workers working at a site in the 2400 block of Barry Avenue near 10 highways where they heard the victim scream.

“Part of you know, ‘Is this really going on now?” And some of you know, ‘We have to help her,'” Rick Dreyfus, the general contractor who helped with the rescue, told KTLA.

The West LA Apartment Complex (KTLA), where a 63-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a naked man on February 27, 2025, is a construction site visible in the 2400 block of Barry Avenue, next to the I-10 Expressway.

He added that he and his crew were 63-year-old woman, Bangala, completely naked, pinned to her back and trying to rape her.

Responding LAPD officials detained the attacker shortly thereafter.

Officials did not provide a residential city for the 33-year-old man, but witnesses told KTLA they believe he came from a nearby homeless camp.

The 63-year-old, unspecified woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and released. The child was treated on site.

Bangala was charged with assaulting forced rape during a robbery committee that caused major physical injuries to victims and child abuse, with intensifying suspicious attacks with “major violence” and “higher abuse.”

“The violence against children and the elderly, some of our community’s most vulnerable members, is beyond condemnation,” District Attorney Hochman said he had announced the charges last week.

Bangala, who pleaded not guilty, is in custody on $2 million bail.

If convicted as a charge, the 33-year-old faces 13 years of maximum life sentence in a state prison and will need to register as a life sex offender, officials said.
