The concept behind self-driving Waymo taxis may be a little confusing, but one thing is clear: You don’t need to be behind the wheel.
Police said they learned about it Thursday morning when a man was taken into custody in downtown Los Angeles after he allegedly tried to drive away in a Waymo.
Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison said police responded to a report of an attempted car theft at 12:26 a.m. near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Hill Street. Police said the unidentified man entered the vehicle from the passenger seat and moved to the driver’s seat.
Video from Stringer Service’s OC Hawk showed a bearded man sitting in a stopped self-driving car, sticking his head out and speaking to police. Officers said the suspect appeared to be under the influence.
The man refused to exit the vehicle as police approached behind the riot shield. At least one weapon was drawn. Video of the incident, first reported by news station KTLA, showed a large soda can on top of the vehicle, but it is unclear whether it belonged to the man or whether the man called Waymo service. It’s unclear who that person is.
It is unclear whether the man was arrested.
