A Redondo Beach man was charged with attempted murder, allegedly firing two dozen shots in a woman’s car earlier this year before fleeing the country for the Philippines.
John Paul Cristman, 47, appeared in Los Angeles County court on Monday, facing charges of attempted murder and multiple firearm-related crimes, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
On May 9, Christman ran behind a woman’s parked car at the Rolling Hills Plaza Shopping Centre in Torrance and began shooting indiscriminately, attacking the woman’s car 20 times and slamming the occupied dance studio at least six times.
Miraculously, no one was injured in the shooting.
“The victims faced a barrage of bullets and we are grateful that no one was hurt in this meaningless, rapid fire attack,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a news release.
A few days after fleeing the scene of the shooting, Christman fled the country for the Philippines, where he remained until last week. Local authorities partnered with the Department of Homeland Security and the former US Bureau of S to find Christman overseas and hand him over to California.
Hochman thanked his local and federal law enforcement partners who returned Christman to the United States to “facing these allegations in court.”
Christman appeared in the first court on Monday. He remains in custody after setting bail at $1.95 million.
If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence in a state prison.
Christman is scheduled to appear in court again on August 13th.
