Prosecutors say the 27-year-old man was charged with attempted murder this week after being allegedly shot a Los Angeles police officer in the leg while pursuing his foot.
According to Los Angeles County DIST, Ernesto Sepulveda, who allegedly fired fire on two officers who allegedly fired fire on July 5th at two officers who tried to question him near Martin Luther King Jr. Park, faces life in prison if he is convicted of attempted murder for two counts. LAPD chief Jim McDonnell said last week that he was assigned to “gang enforcement details” when officers approached Sepulveda. According to McDonnell, he ran away, “I looked back at our officers and fired.”
The police officer was hit with his leg and suffered a life-threatening injury.
“We are grateful that the two police officers who targeted this brave, unprovoked attack survived this horrifying encounter,” Hochman said in a statement. “We do not tolerate any acts of violence against those sworn to protect us.”
Sepulveda pleaded not guilty during his arrest Wednesday. He is represented in the office of LA County Public Defence Counsel. The spokesman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Hochman said the weapon used Sepulveda was a so-called “ghost gun” and had no serial number.
