The 54-year-old Irvine man was charged with a racially motivated road rage dispute in Irvine on Monday.
Robert Leon Tackett was charged with fatal weapons, civil rights violations, assault with force that could cause serious bodily injury, and assault to injure all felony. He is also facing increased hate crime sentences.
Tackett was arrested Thursday around 2:30pm, said Kyle Ordarp, a spokesman for the Irvine Police Department.
Tackett was seen “screaming” at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at a garbage truck driver.
For some reason, Tackett’s attention was drawn to the other drivers and he followed the vehicle, Orde said. Tackett was accused of “driving aggressively and swinging into the lanes multiple times,” Olderp said, adding that his actions mostly caused a crash.
Tackett drank hot coffee in the car and slapped the victim’s face, hands and the inside of his car before yelling Latino racism as a driver, Orde said.
The driver created a video of the conflict and posted it on Instagram, Oldoerp said. The conflict was reported to police late Wednesday night, Oldoerp said.
Investigators asked anyone with relevant information about the suspect to contact rteen@cityofirvine.org.
