A man was killed Wednesday after facing a group of shoplifters in a parking lot at the South El Monte shopping center.
Around 12:20pm, 60-year-old Kourosh “Steve” Yaghoubi, 60, was helping out a huge discount in the 2000 block of his brother’s store, Durfee Avenue.
Yaghoubi, according to eyewitnesses, attacked him, hit him on the head and chased the shoplifter who hit him on the ground. The suspect’s escape vehicle ran over him as he was lying unprotectedly in the middle of the parking lot, the victim’s family said.
He was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death and confirming it is related to a shoplifting incident. Authorities have not yet declared it an investigation into the murder.
On Wednesday evening, detectives canvas the area on foot and knocked on the door for a lead to help with the investigation.
“Many of the agents we see in Plain Cross are on our video canvas team and they are working hard to find a lead now,” Detective Lead Michael Modica told KTLA’s Rick Chambers.

Yaghoubi’s brother John was on the scene throughout the day, but his family says unfortunately he is well-versed in the tragedy.
“I don’t know what to do anymore,” said John Yagubi. “I lost my brother four years ago. My mother is 94. She is still in mourning for her first person. I don’t know how to tell her.”
As the investigation continued, the detectives remained at the scene late in the evening. So far, no descriptions of the suspect or his vehicle have been provided.
The investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information will be urged to contact the LASD Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can be provided online or by calling 800-222-8477.
