A handcuffed man who crashed his car into a backyard died in police custody, authorities said.
According to Long Beach Police, just before 6 p.m. Friday, officers were dispatched to a home in the 5300 block of Cerritos Avenue for a report of a crash into a residential fence.
“Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle involved in a single-vehicle crash in the backyard of a residence,” LBPD said. “As part of the investigation, officers approached the adult male driver inside the vehicle, ordered him to exit the vehicle, and placed him in handcuffs.”

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and began rendering medical aid to the man. According to LBPD, the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The incident is being investigated as an in-custody death because the deceased was handcuffed, police said, adding that officers did not use any force.
As with all in-custody death investigations, homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate the incident, according to LBPD. Additionally, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has been notified and will conduct an independent investigation.
