Pacific Palisades fire evacuees who lost their homes in the raging wildfires on Jan. 7 recently had the opportunity to thank the firefighters who saved their two dogs.
Casey Colvin was working in the city last week when she learned of the Palisades fire evacuation. He borrowed a bicycle and raced back to his two dogs at his Pacific Palisades mansion.
They finally arrived five hours later, but were unable to get past the barricade. Firefighters then went to his location and knocked down the door to his home. Cal Fire Battalion Chief Brent Pascua was able to rescue one of Colvin’s dogs, but the other, Oreo, was still missing.
The small, white, blonde Pomeranian had been missing for five days when Colvin got a call saying Oreo had been found among the rubble and debris on a nearby property.
NBC News’ Liz Kreutz also attended the emotional reunion.
When Colvin made a noise with the toy, Oreo, clearly spooked, slipped through the mansion’s gate and jumped into Colvin’s arms.
“You’re alive! Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, God,” Colvin exclaimed as he hugged Oreo.
This week, Colvin was reunited with the man who saved his dog during the historic California wildfires.
“This person [Pascua] I saved your life. This guy saved your life,” said Colvin, holding an Oreo and Tika Tika Tika. “And you look like a Ken doll!”
Pascua told NBC News that with so much negativity to process, bright moments of hope and gratitude like this help amid so much devastation.
“If that dog could talk, it would have a story to tell. It would be a national bestseller,” Pascua said of the pet rescue.
Colvin said he had never experienced anything like this before and was in the middle of a crisis when he met the firefighters.
“My dog survived because you left the door open…If it wasn’t for you, my dog would have died,” Colvin told Pasqua.
