The man was ordered to go to trial on charges stemming from the shooting of a driver who allegedly plowed into a crowd of pedestrians outside an East Hollywood nightclub and injured 37 people.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mildred Escovedo has denied a defense motion dismissing the case against Efren Villarobos, 28, of Lawndale, who was charged with one felony count of each attack with a firearm.
Possession of a firearm by a felony.

The criminal charges allege that Villa Lobos personally used a handgun on the crime committee, causing serious physical injuries to driver Fernando Ramirez.

Villalobos is allegedly pre-convicted of robbery in 2024, starting from 2022 for grand theft, according to the complaint.

He was taken into custody by Redondo Beach Police on August 3rd and later handed over to detectives at the Los Angeles Police Department.

According to LAPD, Villalobos is suspected of shooting 29-year-old Ramirez, 29, in the early morning hours of July 19th in a chaotic scene near a nightclub in the 1000 block of Vermont Avenue.

LAPD detective Jose Hidalgo testified that surveillance video showed Ramirez showing a man identified as “not involved in the collision” and was attacked by several men after being pulled out of the vehicle following the crash.

“His hands were extending in Mr. Ramirez’s direction,” the detective testified. “He shoots Mr. Ramirez and then runs away on foot.”

Detectives added that the accused got a skateboard towards the bus stop and helped them determine that the surveillance video was monitored in an apartment less than two miles away.

“He said he doesn’t remember doing it,” detectives said of Villarrobos’ reaction when asked after his arrest of the shooting.

Villalobos later admitted that he was the person depicted in four stills in surveillance video, including three at the crime scene, detectives said.

Meanwhile, Ramirez returned to court in downtown Los Angeles for his September 4 arrest. His arrest was initially postponed for more than a week while he recovered from a gunshot wound.

Ramirez, who has a long criminal history in Orange County, dates back to 2014, was charged with 37 counts if charged on July 22.

The charges “respond to each of the 37 victims who were injured as a result of Mr. Ramirez’s actions,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said last month.
