The LA County Sheriff’s Department said the 41-year-old man was fatally shot while trying to protect his vehicle during an attempted theft in South Los Angeles.
Deputies responded to reports of shootout casualties at about 9:20pm Saturday in the 8000 block of LA County’s unconsolidated South Hooper Avenue. They found two injured men in a nearby alley. One was shot in the upper fuselage and was declared dead at the scene by the LA County Fire Department. The other man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.
Investigators learn that the man has heard the car’s alarm go in the parking lot, and finds it parked there and finds the three of them trying to steal the vehicle.
As the man confronted the thief, a fourth individual, standing near the entrance to the alley, fired at them. The Sheriff’s Office said one of the men who was apparently fired from the Self-Defense Forces on release.
The thief fled west of East 81st Street in a new model red or burgundy four-door coupe, officials said.
