The man standing in traffic with a machete waving in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday was eventually shot by police after getting into the car, leading them in a short pursuit before approaching the officer with a weapon outside the crypto.com arena.
According to a social media post from the Los Angeles Police Department, the man who was not identified immediately was expected to survive after receiving medical care.
The man was waving a machete in the middle of Figueroa Street, near Olympic Boulevard on Sunday morning.
According to the LAPD, when police first arrived, the man advanced towards the officers, jumped into the black Dodge Challenger and led them in a short pursuit.
The pursuit ended on Figueroa Street, south of 12th Avenue. There, the video shows the man leaving his car and still waving a machete. According to the video, he was shot after moving towards an LAPD officer with a weapon still in hand.
“You can give so many warnings,” LAPD detective Meghan Aguilar told KABC. The shooting is under investigation.
The man was taken to a local hospital where he had surgery, LAPD officials said Sunday afternoon. He was expected to recover, but it was not immediately clear what criminal charges he would face.
