The Florida man was arrested for attacking an 11-year-old child and believed he had thrown eggs into his apartment last week, the Hillsboro County Sheriff’s Office said.
On Saturday afternoon, lawmakers responded to an apartment at Allison Park Place after receiving a report of assault.
Marius Mutu, 43, was caught in a video staring at the young girl as she screamed, and begged someone to help her. Deputies say Mutu chased the girl and pushed her to the ground.
A bloody cry from a child warned residents of a Hillsboro County apartment.
“Please, I wasn’t doing anything,” the child cried as the man restrained her on the ground. “I swear my life. Please help me.”
Mutsu responds to her, but it’s unclear what he’s saying. The girl screams again that she’s done nothing as Mutu grabs her arm and tries to hold it in place.
Before the video concludes, another man stepped in and asked Mutt to get off the child.
The neighbor responded to the video and said it was difficult to watch.
“As a mom, it makes me sick to my stomach,” said resident Hannah Noel. “It’s ridiculous for a grown man to do something to a vulnerable person.”
Mutt spoke to officials and said that someone had threw eggs into his apartment last week. When it happened again that day, Mutsu assumed that a nearby child would be responsible. He also allegedly attempted to take photos of the child to report the incident to the apartment management, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The long-term trauma and others who witnessed it, like there are kids up and down these streets every night,” Noel said. “I thought, ‘What if it was my child or ours?” ”
Hillsboro County Sheriff Chad Cronister called the man’s actions “not only unacceptable, but also condemns.”
“This child endured a horrible and traumatic experience in the hands of those who chose to take the matter into their own hands,” Chronister said. “We continue to commit to protecting children and ensuring that those who hurt children are fully accountable.”
Mutu was arrested on charges of battery and false imprisonment.
