A man and his friend were able to prevent the Palisades Fire from destroying their home Wednesday night as relentless fires continued to ravage coastal communities.
Nick Libonati and a group of his friends used buckets of water to quickly extinguish hot spots near their home and neighbor’s property. Libonati and his group faced dangerous conditions during their operation, as strong winds were blowing and the threat of fire loomed over their homes.
The group, made up of at least four people, was seen filling buckets with water from Libonati’s pool and passing it between members to pour into hot spots.
The Pacific Palisades resident said he was evacuated from his home on Tuesday and returned with friends on Wednesday. Fortunately, his house survived the fire.
“We were really lucky to get here in time,” Libonati said. “You can’t understand the feeling, especially having my best friend come with me. In my opinion, he’s a hero to me.”

Libonati recalled seeing smoke coming from the hillside behind her home Tuesday morning. He said he called 911 to report what started out as a small cloud of smoke, then exploded into what is now known as the devastating Palisades Fire.
“This is unbelievable. This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said.
The fire, which has displaced thousands of residents, gutted neighborhoods and reduced buildings to unrecognizable rubble, had grown to more than 17,000 acres as of Wednesday night.
