Many voters are also undecided about California’s 2026 governor race and democratic efforts to redraw the state’s legislative districts to counter GOP efforts in other states, according to a new poll released Friday.
In the first poll that former Vice President Kamala Harris chose not to run for governor, former Democrat Katie Porter gained 18% of registered voters in California, while Republican commentator Steve Hilton received 12% support, according to the Emerson College vote. Other candidates in the vast field did not receive double-digit support, with 38% of voters saying they were undecided.
The primary election will be held on June 2nd. These numbers could fluctuate dramatically over the next 10 months as candidates have not yet been actively advertising or reaching out to voters.
When asked about special elections that could occur in November, voters split over proposals for democratic efforts to redraw Congressional districts. According to the vote, a third of voters supported the effort, a quarter opposed it, and 42% were unsure.
Although rezoning usually occurs after a former census, California is considering redrawing the congressional boundaries to counter potential moves by Texas and other GOP states, increasing the number of Republicans in the House and maintaining control of the Congress.
California lawmakers are expected to vote to call a special election on the matter after returning from the summer holidays on August 18th.
The poll of 1,000 California voters was conducted on August 4th and 5th, with a 3% error in both directions.
