Investigators investigating the cause of the fatal explosion at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department facility in East LA are currently considering another location in Marina del Rey.
The sheriff’s murder investigator, along with officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Cigarette, Firearms and Explosives, and Los Angeles Police Department, served as a search warrant in the 13,900 block of Marquesas Way, Marina del Rey, following the origins of the explosive device that ultimately led to a fatal blast, said the director of LA County Sheriff.
The most recent search came three days after a search warrant was executed at a Santa Monica residence in the Bay Street and Lincoln Avenue areas. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the search led to the recovery of explosives, including rena bullets.
Two rena bullets were also recovered after the property tenants reported they had found them within a storage unit to the Santa Monica police. According to Santa Monica police, the LASD bomb squad removed two hand rena bullets that were determined to be inert from the complex.
A law enforcement source told NBC Los Angeles last week that three deputies killed in the explosion were dealing with small “military-style devices” that had been tested or X-rayed. However, it was not immediately clear what had happened just before the explosion.
The explosion occurred when these devices were brought into the parking lot of an East LA training facility.
The deputy was thrown quite a distance from the explosion.
Neighbors also told NBCLA the explosion was loud and rattled the community.
The three deputies killed in the explosion have been identified as Joshua Kelly Ecklund, Victor Remus and William Osborne detective Joshua Kelly Ecklund.
They were allotted to the Special Enforcement Bureau’s Arson Explosive Details, collectively with over 70 years of experience.
