Hundreds of US Marines were sent to Los Angeles amid immigrant raids and protests.
The Pentagon confirmed Monday that 700 Marines will be sent home in Southern California in a few weeks.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized the presence of California State Guard Marines and roughly 4,000 members as a waste of taxpayer money and called for another withdrawal at a press conference Monday morning.
A few hours later, the Marines left and it appears she has got her wish as it is said that half of the National Guard members have returned home in previous announcements.
These forces have been largely idle since their arrival in June on a mission to protect federal buildings. “There’s not much to do,” one Marine told the Times in Los Angeles.
The New York Times spoke with National Guard officials. He said, “Of the 3,882 equipment members deployed, about 400 were actually sent to tasks away from the base.”
After these departures, “a brigade of 1,892 members of the military police remained,” the NY Times added.
