Maryland House lawmakers have attempted to return to the United States from El Salvador to meet deported illegal immigrants and failed to suspect MS-13 gang member Kilmer Abrego Garcia.
Rep. Glenn Evie said he was “stonewalled” in his efforts to check Abrego Garcia’s welfare, which has become a deeply polarizing issue for Republicans and Democrats. The Trump administration has also accused Abrego Garcia of being a trafficker and wife Beater, but Democrats say he is the “Maryland Man” who was not given his due process in court before he was deported.
“I was not only disappointed, but actually angry,” Ivy told reporters after returning from his trip Tuesday morning.

Ivy said he didn’t use taxpayer money to fund his trip, but he arranged embassies in the United States and El Salvador to meet Abrego Garcia in prison, but when he got there he met a bureaucratic hurdle. Ivy said he was told he had to get permission 90 minutes away.
“And I won’t tell you what I said, but it’s ridiculous that an international delegation will receive such treatment, especially when you’re making this kind of demand,” Ivy said.

He didn’t say if he tried to get permission, but added that locals told them that even their families didn’t have permission to visit their loved ones while in custody.
“It was a clear run and not the way foreign governments should have handled the US Congress,” he said.
Ivy said he wanted to see Abrego Garcia to check the detainee’s status, location and ensure he receives legitimate proceedings in US courts. Several other Democrats, including Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen, have rushed to meet Abrego Garcia, accusing them of saying they were lack of a legitimate process that has expanded to him.

When asked about Abrego Garcia’s condition, Ivy told reporters, “Nothing has been confirmed along those lines. I believe he is in Santa Ana. But they didn’t confirm it yesterday.
In a video posted on X on Monday, Ivey wrote that he traveled to Central American countries to visit “members” and called on the government to “cut the crap.”
Abrego Garcia was sent to a well-known high-security prison in El Salvador in March and was equipped to handle members of a violent gang known as Secott. The Trump administration has repeatedly cited court and police documents showing that not only was the Salvadoran man illegally in the United States, but he was also linked to the MS-13 gang, and that his wife had warned police about his violence.
According to court records, Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sula, filed a protection order against her husband in August 2020. The order stated that their shared son and stepchild need protection from Abrego Garcia and that they should accuse him of her verbal and physical abuse of her child.

Some Democrats and left-wing media have characterized Abrego Garcia as a “family man” who was mistakenly deported in March and the following weeks.
Meanwhile, Ivy has also quit what he said he claims that more than 250 Venezuelans who were imprisoned in El Salvador after their deportation from the United States have allegedly been sent to a country with no criminal history and no pending crimes.
“It’s not American. That’s not something we should do,” Ivy said.
