A large sewage spill closed the waters near Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point on Tuesday.
According to the OC Health Care Agency, a break in the main lift station’s sewer line caused approximately 3,375 gallons of sewage to spill into the ocean.
The spill forced the closure of an open coastal area extending from 1,500 feet upstream to 1,500 feet downstream of Salt Creek.
Health officials said the burst sewer pipe has since been repaired, but will remain closed as a precaution.
During this period, visitors are not allowed to swim, surf, or dive in the affected waters.
The city’s health inspection team will monitor water quality along the affected coastline. Swimming areas will remain closed until results meet safe water quality standards.

Officials warned that anyone who came into contact with contaminated water during this period could become ill. Particularly susceptible are children, the elderly, or people with weakened immune systems.
