Maxine Waters campaign hit with a $68,000 fine after FEC investigation

The campaign for Progressive California Rep. Maxine Waters has agreed to pay a $68,000 fine after the investigation was found to violate multiple election rules.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) said citizens of Waters, a longtime House member of the 2020 campaign committee, violated several campaign finance laws in a tranche of documents released Friday.

The FEC accused of “failing to accurately report receipts and expenditures for the 2020 calendar year,” “willfully accept excessive contributions,” and “willfully accept prohibited cash expenditures.”

The Waters Committee agreed to “pay civil fines within one year of the effective date of this agreement and “send accounting to a committee-sponsored training program for the political committee.”

“The respondent shall submit to the committee evidence of necessary registration and attendance at such events,” the document stated.

Citizens for Waters had embraced the over-camera contributions from seven people totaling $19,000 in 2019 and 2020.

The committee offloaded these excessive donations, albeit in a “too early” way, the document said.

The Waters Campaign Committee also “had four cash expenditures that exceeded $100 each and banned a total of $7,000,” the FEC said.

The Campaign Committee “confessed that the legal counsel has implemented procedures to ensure that it complies with the requirements of the law in order to provide advice and guidance to the Treasurer.”

Leilani Bieber, who was listed as a citizen of Waters’ lawyer, last year wrote to the FEC that its campaign finance violation was an “erroneous error” saying that it was “not intentional.”

Waters, a top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, has been in Congress since 1991.

New movements within the probe were first reported by OpenSecrets.

However, it is not the first time Waters has produced public scrutiny.

In 2023, a survey by Fox News Digital found that the Waters campaign paid $192,300 to its daughter to pay for Operation Slate Mailer between January 2021 and December 2022.

Water reportedly paid one out of thousands to her daughter for her campaign work.

A complaint that Waters’ campaign accepted an illegal campaign contribution in 2018 was overwhelmingly rejected by the FEC with a 5-1 vote.

Fox News Digital reached out to Beavers, Waters’ Congressional Office and citizens of Waters for comment.
