First on FOX: The bipartisan pair of senators teams up to pass the “common sense law” that ensures that families of former law enforcement officers killed during their retirement are protected by benefits.

Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) first shared with Fox News Digital to amend the public safety officer benefits program and refer former law enforcement officer families if they receive benefits and receive permanent disability if they receive benefits.

The law is named after Chief Herbert D. Profit, a retired officer who was shot dead in his driveway by someone arrested decades ago.

The GOP Senator reveals his strategy to promote Trump’s policy through Congress: “I believe in the agenda.”

Despite working in law enforcement for 55 years, Proffitt’s family was denied benefits because they left the job prior to the attack.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that their families are cared for when law enforcement officers are killed for the work they did to keep our community safe,” former law enforcement officer Cortez Masto said in a statement. “I’m proud to showcase this important common sense law to correct the wrong Chieffit family that I have experienced and to prevent it from happening to others.”

This amendment also applies to claims by former law enforcement officers who have retired after January 1, 2012.

Former Senator Dem John Tester has linked his 2024 defeat to a decline in Kamala Harris’ performance in his state

“The loss of Chief Herbert D. Prophet is a tragic reminder of the risks that follow the highest level of everyday life,” McConnell said. (Getty Images)

“The loss of Secretary Herbert D. Profit is a tragic reminder of the finest risks of our lives,” McConnell said in a statement shared with Fox News Digital.

“The law closes an important hole and ensures that professors and other families like them are supported and that the service and sacrifice of loved ones will never be forgotten,” the senator said.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that our families are cared for when law enforcement officers are killed for the work they did to keep our community safe,” said former law enforcement officer Cortez Masto. (Ellen Schmidt/AP Photo)

The bill has been approved by several police advocacy groups, including the Police Brothers’ Order, the Nevada Public Safety Officers Association, the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association, the Metropolitan Police Department Foundation in Las Vegas, and the Support Hero.
