COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Columbia University’s more than $200 million discriminatory settlement with the Trump administration laid the foundation for a culture of accountability, Education Secretary Linda McMahon shared in an interview with Fox News Digital.

President Donald Trump’s administration is celebrating the consideration of a “historical reconciliation” with the university, which has become protesters to reject war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, since Hamas’ attacks on Israel and Hamas’s attacks.

“We are extremely pleased to have concluded these negotiations and brought about excellent cooperation with Colombia. They knew they had anti-Semitism issues,” McMahon said ahead of his remarks at the National Association of Governors (NGA) Summer Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The settlement not only combats anti-Semitism on university campuses, but also takes steps to remove discriminatory employment practices and improve campus safety, the Education Secretary explained.

“This agreement will be a great template for other universities to use it as well,” McMahon said.

Several Jewish leaders spoke to Fox News Digital about the “existential threat” facing Jewish New Yorkers since 33-year-old socialist Zohran Mamdani became the Democratic candidate for New York mayor.

During the major campaign, Mamdani refused to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifadas” and acknowledges Israel as a Jewish state as anti-Semitic.

He has since said it discourages others from using phrases, constantly confirming his commitment to condemn the rise of anti-Semitism in New York City.

The Pro-Hamas slogan on the sheet is hung in the Butler Library on Columbia University’s campus.

Jubal David, a Jewish advocate and advisor, told Fox News Digital that Mamdani, as mayor, “can empower anti-Semitic protesters.”

In light of the Columbia University settlement, Fox News Digital asked McMahon if the Trump administration is worried about a surge in anti-Semitism on New York City’s university campus if Mamdani is elected in November.

“We didn’t discuss it as part of what we were doing. We didn’t see any particular incidents that could happen in the future,” explained McMahon.

But the Education Secretary said the most important thing in the Columbia University settlement is, “You are prepared for it, regardless of what incidents will occur or not, to lay the foundation.”

McMahon said Columbia currently has a “great collaboration” with the New York Police Department (NYPD).

The settlement includes Columbia’s commitment to “enforce strict rules against destructive protests, ban masked protests, maintaining trained security guards and continuing cooperation with the New York Police Department.”

“They don’t hesitate to bring them in to arrest them,” McMahon warned. “The consequences arise. People are expelled. They are stopped. If there is a criminal act, they can go to prison.

“The accountability factors in this agreement are very strong and that is the message we intend to send, and campus students must be in the environment for research.”

Deirdre Heavey is a political writer for Fox News Digital.
