COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — Despite protesting President Donald Trump’s plan to demolish the Department of Education, Education Secretary Linda McMahon said returning education to the state is a “non-partisan issue.”

“I’m not pushing back because if it was a Democrat or Republican state that was going well or doing poorly, that’s one thing, but it’s a lot of states on both sides of the aisle. So this is really a nonpartisan issue.”

The Education Secretary participated in discussions with the governor from both parties to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the conference and her department announced a release of approximately $6.8 billion in federal funds previously frozen for the K-12 program ahead of a panel discussion with the outgoing NGA chair Gov. Jared Polis, D-Colo.

“If we’re going to bring education back to the state, it’s very important that we have to talk to the governor,” McMahon emphasized. “What makes sense for them? How can we work together? This is on both sides of the aisle, and education is clearly a nonpartisan issue.”

Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education earlier this year, fulfilling one of his major campaign promises in the 2024 presidential election.

McMahon explained that returning education to the state “meaning that it would be to return them the portion currently being provided by the federal government to them, and they are worried about it.”

In a joint statement on behalf of the NGA, Police and the next NGA Chair Kevin Stitt, R-OK, said “those bipartisan debates with Secretary McMahon and other key officials have led to the distribution of these education funds during the NGA’s summer meetings.”

The Education Secretary, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), explained to Fox News Digital that attending events like the NGA, discussing with the governors of both parties, and visiting as many states as possible is important for understanding America’s diverse educational landscape.

McMahon said he has already visited many different types of schools, from charter schools to public schools, to learn best practices around the country.

Jared Police, the National Association of Governors’ Associations (NGA) Senior General Jared Police will discuss American education with Education Secretary Linda McMahon at an NGA Summer Meeting held in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Friday, July 25th, 2025.

“Every state has a variety of needs,” McMahon said. “There’s no one in every size, but what we hear with every governor and almost every educator is what we’re stressing: literacy.”

A report from the Ministry of Education, released earlier this year, revealed that reading comprehension among American students has continued to decline since the Covid-19 pandemic, with little improvement in mathematics skills.

Despite the disastrous reports, McMahon said, “The future for education is very bright.” This is because the Trump administration has called attention to the “national reporting card” and reveals “how the United States doesn’t compare so favorably to all the world.”

“The President is very keen to make sure these levels rise, and the United States holds a legitimate position as one of the world’s education leaders,” explained McMahon.

And when asked how the Secretary of Education would deal with teachers worried about demolishing the Ministry of Education, McMahon said it focused on ensuring that the nation can accommodate the individual needs of teachers while ensuring that best practices are implemented nationwide.

“[Teachers] McMahon works with school committees to work with principals, supervisors and governors to develop the best policies in the state. They should be able to spend that time with their students. ”

“Let the teachers teach them. This is all good,” explained McMahon.
