Although there were initially several instances of peaceful protests, Friday’s property destruction and violence broke out in circumstances that led to more and more violent over the coming days, leading to injured police officers.
“Last night, over 1,000 mobs surrounded federal law enforcement buildings, attacked ice law enforcement officials, slashed tires and damaged field buildings, providing taxpayer funding,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a press release on Saturday, referring to the night before.
Several officers were injured in the riots, rocks and other projectiles were thrown at them, and dozens of people were arrested in connection with the protests and riots.
Social media conservatives have denounced various media and Democrats who used peaceful phrasing to describe the protest despite various examples of violence, property destruction and burning cars.
President Donald Trump sent the National Guard over the weekend, sparking outrage from local Democrats, and announced on Monday that he would mobilize the Marines to quell the riots.
