A closed-door meeting is scheduled for today between more than 20 members of Kitty and Jose Menendez’s family and newly elected District Attorney Nathan Hockman regarding the Menendez brothers’ case.
Former District Attorney George Gascón agreed with Eric and Lyle’s indignation, but Hochman said he needed more time to examine the evidence in the case.
Prior to this meeting, these relatives released the following statement: In the next chapter. I hope that this meeting will bring us one step closer to spending next Christmas together as a family. ”
The brothers are serving life sentences without parole for the 1989 murder of their parents.
Today’s meeting is the latest development in this decades-old case that has received significant attention over the past few months.
From documentaries to Netflix shows to new evidence in the case, the brothers’ relatives have called the current sentence “unfair” due to their alleged childhood abuse. He has advocated for resentencing and release.
Just over five weeks ago, Eric and Lyle appeared in court virtually, with their families in the audience.
“I want them home. They should never have been in that situation,” said Joan Vandermolen, one of the brothers’ aunts.
She and another aunt testified at that hearing and appealed for her release.
But not all of the brothers’ relatives believe they should be released.
Milton Anderson, Kitty Menendez’s brother, said through his attorney that he disagrees.
Looking ahead, there will be an outrage hearing on January 30th that could decide their fate.
