The California Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that caused a Metro E Line train to derail early Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The accident was reported at 9:20 a.m. at the intersection of South Rowan Avenue and East 3rd Street near Our Lady of Lourdes Church, disrupting traffic between East L.A.’s Maravilla and Indiana stations.
A Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson said authorities found a vehicle that had been hit by a train, with the driver trapped inside. The driver was taken to the hospital, where he was found to be unconscious and in critical condition.
The cause of the crash is still unknown, a spokesperson said.
The collision was strong enough to knock the lead car off the westbound tracks, but the train remained upright and crossed the median.
By 11:35 a.m., the train had been moved onto the tracks and underwent a visual inspection, according to Metro officials at the scene.
Trains on the E line resumed regular service just before 12:45 p.m., according to LA Metro Passenger Alert on X.
