What do you know

Mexican boxerage Lio Saza Chavez Jr. was arrested by federal agents at his home in Studio City in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. DHS said he was arrested from an aggressive warrant in Mexico and arrested for allegations of linking with the infamous Sinaloa drug cartel. From a survey that began in 2019. The son of former multi-division boxing champion Julio Saza Chavez, 62, is accused of multiple “fraudulent statements” regarding DHS’s legal residency applications.

Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum said Friday he expects boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to be deported to Mexico after being arrested by federal agents in Studio City this week.

Sheinbaum said Mexico had never previously arrested the 39-year-old former WBC middleweight champion on a 2023 arrest order. She spoke the day after the US Department of Homeland Security announced the arrest of Chavez Jr. in the San Fernando Valley community on suspicion of overstaying a visa and lying on a green card application.

He was being processed for quick removal, according to US authorities.

“The hope is that he will be deported and served his sentence in Mexico,” Sinbaum said in a daily news briefing on Friday that he mentioned the charges he faces weapons and drug trafficking.

Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico has had a warrant for arrest since 2023, and is attributed to an investigation that began in 2019. She said the general office of the lawyer is working on the deportation process.

In a statement, DHS said it stemmed from allegations of Mexico’s aggressive warrants and linking to the infamous Sinaloa drug cartel just days after a match in Anaheim against social media influencer-turned boxer Jake Paul. The agency also said that Chavez Jr. filed multiple fraudulent statements when he applied for permanent residency on April 2, 2024, based on his marriage to US citizen Frida Munoz. She is the mother of the granddaughter of the imprisoned Sinaloa Cartel Kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Chavez Jr. was detained in Mexico by citing an aggressive warrant.

“Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain prominent Mexican boxer and criminally illegal alien Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and process him for quick removal from the United States,” the agency said Thursday. “Chavez is a Mexican citizen and has an aggressive arrest warrant in Mexico for his involvement in organized crime and human trafficking firearms, ammunition and explosives.”

Chavez Jr.’s lawyer said he was on a scooter when he was taken into custody outside his Studio City residence by about two dozen law enforcement agencies. Chavez Jr., son of multi-division boxing champion Julio Saza Chavez, was placed in ice custody after being arrested in the Los Angeles division of enforcement and removal operations.

“Our family is deeply concerned with the situation. During these difficult times, we repeat our full and unconditional support for Giulio. We fully trust his innocence and his character, as we do the judicial system in Mexico and the United States, and we hope that the situation will adhere to his rights and truths and adhere to his rights and truths.

Chávez Jr. won the middleweight title in June 2011, defending the title three times. He was born in Sinaloa, Mexico, and embarked on a professional boxing career as a teenager, making his debut in September 2002.

The NBCLA spoke with Chávez Jr.’s lawyer after DHS announced his arrest.

“This seems like just another headline that terrifies the Latino community,” said attorney Michael A. Goldstein, referring to his recent immigration enforcement business in Southern California. “In a lawsuit that includes a gun, the court granted the diversion of mental health, which acknowledged that Chavez is eligible and appropriate for the laws of the state. He has fully complied with his diversion and has completed all the requirements sought from him, and expects the case to be dismissed under the diversion law.

Goldstein was asked about the cartel allegations.

“This is the first time I’ve heard of these outrageous allegations,” he said.

In January, the Trump administration designated drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, saying the organization “constitutes a national security threat beyond what has been brought about by traditional organized crime.”

His arrest comes after weeks of federal immigration enforcement efforts in the Los Angeles area after President Trump became a central part of his campaign. Business operations are reported in residential areas, car washes, hardware store parking and other locations.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
