Mexico filed a lawsuit against Google after changing the Gulf of Mexico label to the US Gulf on its map platform to amend the names of the waters to match the presidential order of Mexico’s president.
Sheinbaum said at a briefing at the press conference that the lawsuit was filed against the tech giant without providing additional details.
The lawsuit comes after Sinbaum threatened to sue Google in February about the name change.

“We’re going to wait. We’ve already seen them observing what this means from a legal advice standpoint, but we hope they make a revision,” Sinbaum said at the time.
Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs has previously sent a letter to Google to encourage it not to unleash the ocean basin as the American Gulf.

Mexico argues that the Gulf Coast label should only apply on the US continental shelf. The US controls about 46% of the Gulf, Mexico controls about 49%, and Cuba controls about 5% according to Soverign Limits, a database of international boundaries.
“What Google is doing here is to rename the continental shelves in Mexico and Cuba. This has nothing to do with Trump’s orders that apply only to shelves in the US,” Sinbaum said in February.
The Gulf appears on Google Maps as the US Gulf of the United States, which is everywhere in the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico (USA) within the Gulf of Mexico (USA). It has been called the Gulf of Mexico for over 400 years.

Google Maps cited the “long-standing practice” of starting to use the US Gulf for US users shortly after Trump’s orders, following the US government’s initiative on these issues. If the official name differs from country to country, Google’s policy says users will see the official local name.
In February, the Mexican president shared an answer from Cris Turner, Google’s vice president of government affairs and public policy. Crisurner said the company will not change its policies after Trump’s order.
The announcement of Sheinbaum’s lawsuit comes after House Republicans passed the US Gulf Bay law with a vote of 211-206, marking the first step to codified Trump’s order. The law is currently heading towards the Senate.
