Michelle Obama sparked a wave of criticism online on Friday after sharing a New Year’s message to her followers on Instagram.

The former first lady wished her followers “Happy Holidays” and posted a video highlighting the Obama Presidential Center’s efforts as 2024 comes to a close. However, critics complained that her video started on a moody note.

“Happy Holidays, everyone. I know these past few months have been difficult for many of us, and you’re feeling a little anxious and anxious,” Obama said in the video.

“But even in difficult times like these, there are many reasons to remain hopeful,” she added, then mentioned a program run by the Obama Foundation.

Within hours of President Obama’s video being released, hundreds of Instagram users commented on it. While many people thanked her for her message and showed support for the Obama Foundation, several supporters of President-elect Trump took a deep dive into Obama’s comments. Their conclusion was that she had President Trump’s victory in mind when she spoke of a “difficult few months,” and they made it clear they disagreed.

One user responded, “Michelle, America is excited about what’s coming – new horizons and prosperity for the nation. 2025-2029! Nothing to worry about here.”

“A difficult few years from the damage the Biden administration has caused!” another commenter wrote. “The situation has never gotten better since Tram won the election! The people have the power! Even those celebrities can’t change the situation!”

A third said: “I’m sure it’s no worse than your husband’s administration or the Biden administration.” “That we are certain.”

Meanwhile, Obama’s supporters expressed their appreciation for her video, sharing heart emojis and other positive comments.

“Thank you for the message of hope,” one user replied. “It’s very necessary.”

The Obamas were key surrogates for Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election campaign. Michelle Obama has spoken at multiple rallies on Harris’ behalf and in Pennsylvania three days before the election, calling Trump a “skilled veteran” who poured gasoline on “other people’s real pain and anger and fear.” He hinted that he was a “swindler”.

“We don’t always do the right thing, but here in America, we go up more often than we go down,” President Obama said on Nov. 2 in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

In dark and difficult times, this country needs leaders who “connect with people’s pain and address the systemic problems at its root, not leaders who stoke our fears and focus our anger on each other.” she said.

But after the election, the Obamas issued a joint statement congratulating Trump on his victory but acknowledging that “this is clearly not the outcome we wanted.”

“In a country as large and diverse as ours, we don’t always agree on everything,” the Obamas said. “But to make progress, we must extend honesty and grace, even to those with whom we deeply disagree.”
