Millions of ground pools are recalled for the drows of California infants

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission and manufacturers announced Monday that summer staples in many yards in Southern California – a swimming pool with around 5 million above ground (a summer staple in many yards in Southern California) have been called out for the drowsing of toddlers.

The recall follows the own death of nine children between the ages of 22 months and 3 after accessing the pool via compression straps that created the scaffold. The incidents that occurred between 2007 and 2022 took place in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri, according to a committee press release.

The toddler created a scaffold that could enter and climb into the pool via compression straps wrapped around the outside of the support pole.

own death is the main cause of death in young children aged 1-4 years. Approximately 87% of these deaths occur in home pools or hot tubs, most occurring in pools owned by family, friends or relatives. According to the CPSC, the deaths of young children’s pool drowning occurred in a pool above ground.

Approximately 4,000 own deaths occur in the United States every year. This averages 11 deaths per day.

Most instructions included in a ground pool instruct consumers to remove ladders when the pool is not in use to prevent children from entering.

However, this gives parents a “false sense of security” as young children can climb into the pool using external features such as support straps.

As part of his research, Brickman placed a pool in his lab without water, brought children in 20-45 months, testing his ability to climb the pool in a variety of conditions. His team observed as the children used the support straps as scaffolding to climb into the pool.

Brickman said that affordable alternatives are available to manufacturers, but many continue to use high-risk straps. Recalls affect pools already on sale, but manufacturers may continue to create and sell new pools that use dangerous support straps.

“As above ground pools have the same risk as any other pool,” said Dr. Phyllis Agran, a professor of pediatrics at the UCI School of Medicine and a member of the American Council on Pediatrics on Injury, Violence and Prevention. “The main prevention is to have a sequester fence around the pool,” including self-latching, self-closing gates.” – even if the structure is temporary.

Argan also has additional risks in the above ground pool, such as ladders and the fact that parents cannot see that the child has climbed inside due to the high wall.

A recent petition to the Consumer Protection Agency requires manufacturers to create mandatory regulations that require manufacturers to “child-resistant” ladders on ground and portable pools. The American Academy of Pediatrics has submitted petition support and recommends agents need to design ladders, such as step covers and engineering controls, so that ladders can be posted out of reach while the pool is not in use.

“Toddlers are curious and explore their surroundings,” wrote Dr. Susan J. Cresley, president of the Academy of Pediatrics. “However, they lack the cognitive ability to recognize danger, and it is important to protect infants and children from dangerous consumer products by establishing regulations for such products, such as ladders on the ground and portable pools.”

In the recalled example of a ground pool, an arrow shows a compression strap running externally on the outside and vertical support legs. Even if the ladder is removed, these scaffolds allow children to continue to access the pool and encourage recalls.

(CPSC)

The recall applies to ground pools below 48 inches, with compression straps running on the outside and vertical support legs sold by manufacturers Bestway, Intex and Polygup. Consumers will contact the company immediately to receive their repair kit. The repair kit includes ropes attached to a vertical support voting and wrap around the pool to maintain the structural integrity of the pool. After securing the rope, consumers can cut and remove the compression strap from the pool, CPSC said.

The pool ($400 to over $1,000) has been available nationwide since 2002 at stores such as Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe’s, Kmart, Toys “R” Us, Sam’s Club, The Home Depot, Big Lots, and BJ. It was also sold online on Amazon.com, Wayfair.com, Bestway USA, Intex, Funsicle and Summer Waves websites.
