Minneapolis Mayor Race: Fatte draws comparisons with NYC’s mum ticks

Comparisons of Omar Fate and Zoran Mamdani are easy to draw.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old Ugandan-born state legislator from New York City, surprised the country’s political world a month ago, convincing the Democratic mayoral nomination in the country’s most populous city.

And his victory over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates has made Mamdani a big step towards becoming New York City’s first Muslim and first millennial mayor.

Fate, like Mamdani, is a democratic socialist and Muslim. And at age 35, he is also a member of Generation Y.

A democratic socialist whose score for Midwest Mamdani is called the main approval in a bid for the mayor of Minneapolis.

Democrat Socialist mayoral candidate Omar Fate will be seen in Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 19, 2025.

And like Mamdani, he put Democrats at the facility on top to gain important support when bidding for the mayor of Minneapolis.

“From New York to Minneapolis – Change is coming!” The twin urban branch of American democratic socialists was promoted a week and a half ago after landing support for the Minneapolis branch of the Democrat Farmer Laborg Party, the Democratic Party name in Minnesota.

Fatay has raised his support for incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey, who runs in his third term. However, Frey, who repeatedly faced off during his tenure in the Blue City’s left-leaning city council, will remain on the vote and face Fate in the November election.

And, like New York City, Minneapolis uses ranked optional votes to determine the next mayor.

“This support is a message that Minneapolis residents are making as usual with broken promises, veto and politics. This is a mandate to build a city that works for all of us,” Fate said in Frey’s jab.

However, Frey said, “This election should be decided by our entire city, not by a small number of representatives. I look forward to a full discussion with Senator Fatte about Minneapolis’ future records and vision. Until November!”

Like Mamdani, Fateh offers voters what is characterized as the left agenda.

In New York City, Mamdani is pushing for proposals to eliminate fares for boarding New York City’s vast bus system, earning rent to freeze Cuny (the City University of New York) into a city’s “no tuition fees” housing, providing “free childcare” for children up to five years old, and establishing a government-run grocery store.

RNC Chairman asserts Mamdani’s “Face of the New Democrat”

Fate, the son of Somali immigrant parents who became the first Somali-American to be elected to the Minnesota Senate five years ago, promises to raise the city’s minimum wage, increase the supply of affordable housing, and elect mayor to fight police violence. Like Mamdani, Fateh calls for some of the police department’s duties to be replaced with community-driven alternatives. He also wants to issue legal IDs to undocumented immigrants.

Larry Jacobs, a public relations professor at the University of Minnesota, pointed out many similarities between Mamdani and Fate.

But he said, “The big difference is in Minneapolis, and there’s a two-term mayor who I think is still his favorite to win.”

Jacobs emphasized that Democrats are experiencing “post-election blues.” He said, “The real division in the direction of the party and its division lies between the younger socialist elements… and between the moderate party that has a relationship with business and brings back destructive change.”

Republicans are not merciless about Mamdani and his leftist proposals. They have repeatedly tried to make him the face of the Democrats, but are trying to pin him to a vulnerable Democrat for reelection in the middle of next year.

While not catching up with the kind of media frenzy surrounding Mamdani, Republicans and conservatives have begun targeting Fate.

Among them is Charlie Kirk, a conservative host and rock star of the Magazine world who leads the influential Turning Point USA political youth organization. Kirk recently targeted Fate over Muslim identity.
