April 15th will be a special baseball day forever.
On this day 78 years ago, Jackie Robinson made his MLB debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the colours of sports. Twenty-eight years ago, Commissioner Bud Selig announced that Robinson’s 42nd issue would be retiring throughout the league.
But on Tuesday, Robinson’s number will once again be behind all players.
Jackie Robinson Day was first held on April 15th, 2004. Five years later, a new tradition emerged when all players, managers and coaches began wearing No. 42 for celebrations.
The habit continues on Tuesday, with all organizations taking 42nd place in Dodger Blue, regardless of their usual uniform colour. Players, managers, coaches and referees will also wear a “42” patch on the side of their hat.
The Robinson Dodgers will host the Colorado Rockies in Los Angeles, with all 30 MLB teams operating on Tuesday.
MLB plans a league-wide pre-match tribute video produced by the MLB Network, featuring former professional softball player AJ Andrews.
Rachel Robinson, widow of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and Robinson, are at the Jackie Robinson Museum in New York and welcomes baseball from local Nike Reviving Baseball.
In Florida, Vero Beach’s MLB Jackie Robinson Training Complex will host a minor league game between the Clearwater Thresher and the Palm Beach Cardinals at the historic Holman Stadium where Robinson once played. The game raises funds to support Indian River County’s important programs and services.
