(Nexstar) – Horror Director Osgood Perkins (“Longlegs”) says he had to make a big difference when adapting Stephen King’s short story “The Monkey” for a film of the same name. I had to do that.
And it all goes back to 2010 when Walt Disney photos released “Toy Story 3.”
This is what happened.
“The Monkey” is based on the 1980 King Short Story, and was featured in a now-deprecated adult magazine, and was later published in 1985 as part of the King Story collection, “The Skeleton Crew.” If you roll it up, a toy that hits that cymbal. Unfortunately, every time a monkey hits a cymbal, someone dies.

As you know, King’s original story features a toy monkey with cymbals. This is an image we know well, but the monkeys in Perkins movies play drums.
In an exclusive interview with Gamesradar+, Perkins explained that all of the changes came down to copyright issues.
“When I was given the assignment, the producer said, ‘Oh, by the way, Disney owns cymbals. [the toy monkey in] Toy Story,” Perkins told Gamesradar++. [couldn’t] It becomes a cymbal…it’s one of the things that limits become an opportunity. If you’re making a movie and you’re not happening because of that adage, you’re in real trouble! “I’m like, ‘Hey, that’s great. The drums are better.” The drums are like a marching drum. “Drum roll, please!” Before anything happens. It’s better than cymbals. Thank you, Disney. I like it! ”

Perkins’ films starring Theo James, Tatiana Maslany and Elijah Wood. Other films, including 2015’s “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” and 2020’s “Gretel & Hansel,” follow up with last year’s Mega-Hit “Longlegs.” According to 2024, Variety. (It was also named among the 10 best films of 2024).
Perkins also felt more like a horror comedy to Gamesradar+, the idea that killer toys felt to him, despite many of his films leaning against serious horror.
He added:
“The Monkey” will be appearing in theaters on February 21st.
