The surge in monsoon moisture is presenting a small opportunity for thunderstorms in Los Angeles and the Ventura County Mountains, predictors said.
According to the National Weather Service, there are 15-30% of monsoon thunderstorms in the area. If a storm occurs, authorities warn that it could cause flash flooding in the area, particularly in the mountains and Antelope Valley, and pose the risk of dry lightning that could cause wildfires.
The best chance of a storm is expected on Friday afternoons and evenings as daytime heating increases air instability. San Gabriel Mountain, Antelope Valley and the Ventura County Mountains are the most likely regions to be affected. According to the NWS, there is also a slight chance that the storm will drift into nearby Foothill communities.
Looking forward to the weekend, predictors are hoping for a more gentle situation.
Thunderstorms on Saturdays are still possible in the mountains of eastern LA County, but most areas remain dry at near normal temperatures. Sunday brings similar weather with even lower storm chances.
