El Paso, Texas (Border Report) – A new batch of National Guard members has the authority to arrest immigrants.

Lloyd Easterling, the chief patrol agent for the US Border Patrol, represented a Texas Army National Guard lawmaker and took oath at Monday’s ceremony at Alpine Station in Alpine, Texas.

The new designation allows security guards to enforce federal immigration laws under Title 8. Before Monday, their main role was to gather intelligence, observe and provide logistic support.

Soldiers now have the authority to arrest and detain immigrants for illegally being in the country, under the direction and supervision of the U.S. Border Patrol., according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Big Bend Sector Chief Patrol Agent Lloyd Easterling has granted Title 8 authority at a ceremony on Monday, March 4, 2025 (CBP) and has been sworn in as Texas National Guard Soldier for the Alpine Border Protection.

“We share a historic partnership. We play an important role in securing our community and protecting Americans. “We appreciate your dedication to this mission. We look forward to continuing our mission with you.”

On Thursday, El Paso Sector’s interim chief patrol agent Walter N. Slosar represented 60 National Guard members along El Paso’s border wall.

The Texas Department of Public Safety Director told KTSM that the soldiers will be stationed where they need them.

“They’re sent to threatened areas,” said Jose Sanchez, regional director for West Texas. “It’ll all be determined by border patrols. If there’s an area like Mount Christo Rey, if it’s been a hotspot for a long time, if they feel they need more human power, then they’ll direct those powers that way.”

Christomountray is one of the busiest corridors for migrants smuggled along the US-Mexican border. It is where the states of Texas, New Mexico and the Chihuahuas of Mexico meet. Smugglers often use heavy-duty terrain to hide and avoid border agents. However, the area is also famous for injuring immigrants and fatal waterfalls.

Laredo Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jesse D. Munoz will represent another group of Texas National Guard soldiers in Laredo, Texas on Wednesday.

The ceremony will take place at noon at Hangar No. 3 at CBP Air and Marine Operations’ Laredo branch.
