More people to see food stamp work requirements under Trump’s budget bill

House Republicans are moving to put stricter labor requirements on food stamps to cut government waste and find taxpayer savings for President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill.”

Together, the vast amount of laws need coordination by 11 different House committees, each working on some of them under the panel’s jurisdiction.

The portion released Monday night will raise the age limit for the work requirements of certain healthy adults to 54-year-olds of adults to 64-year-olds of age from 64-year-olds of dietary supplementary assistance programs (SNAP).

The current rules exempt people with dependents under the age of 18, but the new regulations include SNAP recipients with children ages 7 and older who are eligible for work requirements.

The House Agriculture Committee, which oversees the federal food program in addition to American farmers, was tasked with finding spending cuts of $200 billion, totaling between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.

“For too long, the SNAP program has been drifting from bridges to support American households, from bridges to permanent destinations plagued by bureaucratic inefficiency, misguided initiatives and limited accountability,” R-PA Committee Chairman Glenn Thompson said in a statement.

“This part of one big and beautiful bill will restore the program’s original intent, provide temporary support, encourage work, crack down on loopholes exploited by the state, and protect taxpayer dollars while supporting hardworking men and women in agriculture in America.”

The law would also ultimately cover some snap costs to the state. Now, the federal government fully covers all 50 states and half the snap cost of state administrative costs to do so.

The new bill will impose a 5% baseline benefit cost share on all states starting in 2028.

It will also reduce the “match rate” in which the government will reimburse these administrative expenses from 50% to 25%.

Fox News Digital first reported in late February. Republicans reported that they are considering increasing the working requirements for food stamps through settlement when similar laws are introduced by Rep. Dusty Johnson Rs.D., a member of the Agriculture Panel.

House and Senate Republicans are working to advance Trump’s agenda through this year’s budget settlement process.

The settlement allows the parties controlling both the Congressional home and the White House to move large laws, provided they address budget issues such as spending, taxes, or government bonds.

That’s possible by lowering the Senate’s passing threshold from 60 to 51 votes, lining up to the House itself’s simple majority threshold. In other words, the Democrats are completely on the sidelines in the process.

Trump wanted Republicans to create bills that would advance priorities regarding rising borders, immigration, taxes, energy, defense and debt restrictions.

The House Agriculture Committee, along with two other top committees, is moving forward with some of the bill on Tuesday.

Once that is done, all 11 House Committees that have created individual settle works will put them together into a large bill.

House speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. said he hopes to complete some of the family’s efforts by Memorial Day.
