Rain or shine, Southern California residents are beginning to flood roads and skies ahead of Thanksgiving.

AAA says nearly 80 million Americans are expected to travel during the 2024 Thanksgiving travel period (which it believes is Nov. 26 to Dec. 2), which is above pre-pandemic levels and the largest number to date. We predict that this will be the busiest period.

“Nearly 80 million people are expected to travel this year, an increase of 1.7 million compared to last year and an increase of 2 million compared to 2019,” AAA said.

Sunday is expected to be one of the busiest days at LAX, and Terminal 7 was already crowded as of 6:30 a.m., airport officials said.

A group of four siblings heading to Maui for Thanksgiving spoke to KTLA 5’s Erin Myers about arriving at the airport with plenty of time in case it gets very busy. He said he did.

“Traveling during the holidays can be a little chaotic, so we wanted to get here early to make sure we caught our flight,” said one of the siblings, Katie. “Our flight is at 8:50 a.m., but we woke up at 5 a.m. to arrive on time.”

Bad weather isn’t the only thing that can disrupt your holiday air travel plans. A rally and march organized by LAX’s ground staff, who clean planes, handle baggage, maintain airport security and assist passengers in wheelchairs, is planned for Monday, travel experts said. There may be delays.

Local travelers are advised to add additional time to their itinerary by plane or car as a Pacific front brings rain to the region. The National Weather Service said the main effects of this weather pattern were wet, slippery roads and an increase in traffic accidents, with “minor flooding issues” not being ruled out.

Preliminary forecasts show up to an inch of rain could fall in Los Angeles and Ventura counties by Wednesday. Their numbers increase as you go north. Areas of San Luis Obispo County could see up to 2.5 inches of precipitation.

Most of the rain is expected to fall on Monday and Tuesday, forecasters said.
