I was overwhelmed but I’m grateful. It’s how an undocumented woman whose detention spread was able to be reunited with her ailing daughter, and thus explained her release.
Yolanda Perez’s plea with immigration officers last month released her to release her to take care of her daughter, who is battling bone cancer. After being held at a San Diego detention center for about two weeks, Perez was granted bonds on Tuesday and returned to El Monte’s home.
“I’m happy because I’m here with my daughter,” Perez told NBC4.
Perez is the main caretaker of her 21-year-old daughter Xitlali Perez Tejeda and cares during her chemotherapy treatment. The mother was arrested on February 24 after an immigration officer targeted her undocumented son.
“I wasn’t doing anything bad, I’m just fighting to survive,” she said.
Immigration officers discovered Elder Perez had been on shoplifting charges to steal food since 2005, and they arrested her after detaining her son Johnson on non-violent drug and mail theft charges that occurred between 2012 and 2017.
Perez Tejeda, a US citizen, expressed his gratitude for his mother’s release.
“It feels good. It feels like I’m feeling relieved,” she said. She added that reunion with her mother feels like weight off her shoulders.
Perez Tejeda said the family is trying to bring his brother into the house.
The undocumented mother of Elmonte is currently under federal supervision, along with her undocumented son. Her family says she has no criminal history and she is the primary care taker for her daughter, who is battling cancer. Mekahlo Medina is reporting NBC4 News at 5pm on February 27, 2025.
“I hope they let him go,” she said. “He deserves to be here. He’s already had his time, he deserves it, and he changed a lot.”
Elderly Perez entered the United States from Jalisco in search of better opportunities. She said she appreciates her community’s support and the support of the people who came together for her.
“Yes, I’m not documented, but I’m not a bad person,” she said. “We all deserve our rights.”
Perez will need to check in with the immigration officer through her release and live with an ankle monitor for a foreseeable future. She will likely be called to court again, but when is it unknown.
Her son’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
