Walt Disney Co.’s “Mufasa” topped the North American box office chart for the first weekend of 2025.

The photorealistic “Lion King” prequel grossed $23.8 million in its third weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” which has dominated the past two weekends, wasn’t far behind.

“Sonic 3” remained unchanged with an estimated three-day gross of $21.2 million, bringing the domestic total to $187.5 million and helping the series as a whole surpass $1 billion worldwide. . Mufasa’s total is slightly less, at $169.2 million.

In third place, the Focus features remake Nosferatu defied the fate of many of its genre predecessors, dropping just 39% in its second weekend. Horror movies typically drop precipitously after their first weekend, and a drop of less than 50% is notable. With 140 additional screens, “Nosferatu” generated $13.2 million in ticket sales, bringing its total since its Christmas release to $69.4 million. The film, directed by Robert Eggers, has already exceeded its reported production budget of $50 million, but this figure does not include marketing or promotion costs.

There were no new wide releases this weekend, and the top 10 box office grosses were once again left over from last week. Several films have been released in theaters since Thanksgiving. One of them, “Moana 2,” took Disney’s No. 4 spot in its sixth weekend in theaters. The animated sequel grossed an additional $12.4 million, bringing its worldwide total to $960.5 million.

The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown dropped slightly in its second week of release, grossing $8.1 million. The film, which grossed $41.7 million, became Searchlight’s highest-grossing film since Disney acquired the company in 2019.

A24’s erotic drama “Babygirl,” which added 49 locations, stabilized at $4.5 million.

Another Thanksgiving classic, “Wicked,” made it into the top five. Universal’s musical film became available on VOD on January 31, but still grossed an additional $10.2 million from theaters. The film won several awards at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, including nominations for Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Best Motion Picture Musical and Comedy, and last year’s “Cinema and Box Office” nomination, which went to “Barbie.” It is a candidate for

Also this weekend, David Fincher’s 4K restored version of Seven was re-released in IMAX, grossing just over $1 million from 200 locations.

2025 box office receipts are already off to a better start than 2024, with an increase of about 20% over the same weekend last year.

Final national figures will be released on Monday. According to comScore, estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday in U.S. and Canadian theaters are:

1. “Mufasa: The Lion King,” $23.8 million.

2. “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” $21.2 million.

3. “Nosferatu,” $13.2 million.

4. “Moana 2,” $12.4 million.

6. “The Complete Unknown,” $8.1 million.
