All the injured were on the ferry. The ferry carried over 40 people.
The ferry began resting at the sandbar just south of Memorial Causeway Bridge, with all patients and passengers removed.
Police did not immediately provide information about the boat that fled the scene.
“We believe that the person responsible for hitting the ferry left the scene soon, and that our law enforcement partners may have the vessel,” said Rob Shaw, a spokesman for Clearwater Police.
Authorities did not immediately provide the number of people injured.
“All local hospitals have been notified. Multiple trauma alerts have been called and the helicopters are transporting two people who have been more seriously injured,” the Post said.
A video on social media showed several first responders rushing to the scene with the lights flashing.
Police warned the driver to avoid the Memorial Causeway.
The US Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigate the clash.
