The early morning fire that quickly caught a Long Beach apartment on Tuesday evacuated several residents and killed at least three pets, firefighters said.
The incident was reported before 1am on East 17th Avenue near Junipero Avenue.
Arriving firefighters immediately sought additional units after smoke and fire broke out from the balconies on the second, third and fourth floors of the four-storey building, Capt of Long Beach Fire Station. Crabtree confirmed with KTLA.
Investigators believe the flames began on the second floor before they spread to the top of the building.
Firefighters rescued more than dozens of animals, including dogs, cats and birds, Crabtree said. Sadly, the crew finds that two cats and a dog have died in a fire.
Residents told KTLA’s Carlos Herrera that they believe more pets are not being recorded and may be thought to be dead.

The Red Cross responded to the location and assisted eight residents who had evacuated in the fire.
One of those residents said he and his wife were asleep when the fire began.
“My wife and I were in the bedroom,” the man said. “We went to bed early tonight, and someone came to run. ‘Hey, the building is on fire.”
Crabtree said no residents were injured in the fire. The cause is under investigation.
