The family of a woman who died last year during a couple’s visit with her husband in a Northern California prison called for reform after the second woman was killed as well.

According to Thomas’ cousin Janine Rojo, Tania Thomas, 47, was killed in July while visiting her husband, Anthony Curry, at Lava Creek State Jail in Ion overnight.

Curry was charged with murder last week in connection with Thomas’ death and is due to be arrested in April, court records show. Thomas was strangled.

Thomas’ family hadn’t spoken about her murder, but decided to move forward after seeing 62-year-old Stephanie Brinson also die while visiting her 54-year-old husband, David Brinson, in the same prison.

Brinson has not been charged in connection with his wife’s death. The investigation is underway.

Rojo asked visitors for more safety precautions, including checking in for meetings and better screenings for who should be eligible to receive.

“They definitely need to make urgent changes because people’s lives are at risk here,” she said. “If they haven’t stopped visiting these couples, they definitely need to stop it now. The procedure needs to be changed to make it safer.”

Thomas met Curry in 1999 and Rojo said he was pregnant. When it was discovered that Thomas was pregnant, Curry disappeared along with another woman.

While Thomas was working, she saw curry on the news as he was accused of shooting another woman, Cinada Browning, in her head the same year. Browning survived the shooting, but became blind and remained partially paralyzed. Curry, 48, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted second-degree murder.

However, Thomas reunited with Curry, Rojo said he was behind the bar and secretly married him in 2023 without telling her family. She added that Curry was denied parole last year but asked Thomas to “wait for him” before killing her.

The California Department of Amendments and Rehabilitation did not respond to requests for comment.

According to the CDCR, Stephanie Brinson was visiting her husband, David Brinson, in the same prison on November 13th. Around 2am, Brinson told the officer that his wife had passed away. Officers attempted lifesaving measures, but it was declared that she died at 2:51am.

Ati, Amador County district. Todd Leavy confirmed Stephanie Brinson was killed during the lawmaker’s visit. He said he had not received a report from Mule Creek to make a charging decision.

In 1994, Brinson was sentenced to four consecutive life conditions without the possibility of parole to kill four men while robbing an apartment in Los Angeles, The Times reported. He is currently jailed at a California Healthcare facility in Stockton.

According to the amendment department, the couple’s visits are intended to promote family ties. Inmates convicted of sexual offences, those under disciplinary restrictions or on death row inmates are not eligible for overnight visits.

According to the department, visits will take place in facilities such as apartments on individual and prison premises. They last between 30 and 40 hours. Inmates must present four counts in 24 hours and four counts.
