Staple Original Pantry Cafe in Los Angeles has been loved by the city for a century.
Living customers were waiting for another meal on Sunday at the iconic diner on the corner of Figuero A Street and James Wood Boulevard in downtown LA
“We hope we have to say goodbye,” one customer shared with KTLA’s Angeli Kakade. “I don’t think you really are, it will stay in your heart forever.”
The restaurant is owned by former LA Mayor Richard Riordan and was placed in trust after his death in 2023.
News about the trust selling pantry has been going on for months, but we are united here! Local 11 – representing restaurant employees – was trying to negotiate a contract with the trust to help workers maintain their jobs, even if the restaurant was on sale.
A demonstration was held this week to keep the pantry open.
Riordan’s daughter said, “Like most Angelinos, our family saw the pantry as a home away from home. Our minds are directed towards all those involved in the pantry as we move on to the next chapter.”
This sentiment was shared by hundreds who appeared to say goodbye.
The union told KTLA that as of Sunday they wouldn’t tell if there were buyers lined up, but the representative said the fight wasn’t over.
