My wife disappeared without any traces from the California town. Her sister, community will not give up on search

Tyler McCain saw the downcast as he stepped into the microphone during a press conference in search of clues about his wife, Nikki Chen Saley McCain, who has been missing for 10 months.

He stood on his left next to the sisters of Saelee-McCain, with FBI agents and Shasta County Sheriff’s deputy Phalanx standing on his right.

“Efforts that may help bring my wife home will make you safe and we will miss you,” he said. “I really don’t know what to say. I’ve never seen the public, I’m not very good at it, and I’m all apologizing, especially my children, my wife’s family, mine.

It was Monday, March 10th. Then, local and federal law enforcement officials stormed McCain’s home on Friday. They put the evidence in a bag and arrested the woman there. It is unknown whether the woman Christina Adams lived in the house. She was arrested on suspicion of breach of probation.

McCain, 39, has not been charged with a crime in connection with the loss of his wife, which the sheriff’s office is currently investigating as murder. He did not respond to a request for comment through his attorney.

The sheriff’s office said there were “people interested” in the murder, but his identity has not been released and no arrests have been made.

“Since the initial investigation, the detectives have been tirelessly trying to find Nikki and decide on the event that will lead to her loss,” the agency said in a statement on March 14th.

However, since the early days of her losses, doubts and scrutiny of Saelee-McCain’s family and the Northern California Redding community, as well as online detectives, have been placed straight by her husband. Details about the long-stirred relationship between the couple have been released, and protesters followed McCain on the streets and sought an arrest online.

Saelee-McCain’s brothers argued in an interview that McCain was not completely close to them or the investigators.

A few days after the press conference, the sisters traveled together to McCain’s house, where he lived with Saelee-McCain. They asked him for details.

Nikki Cheng Saelee-McCain and Tyler McCain met over a decade ago when the two were working at Win-River Casino outside of Redding. Saelee-McCain was a cocktail waitress, while McCain was a slot technician.

During the first few years of Tyler and Nikki’s relationship, Chloe loved Tyler and thought she was her older brother. She lived with her sister and Tyler a few months after high school.

“Tyler was always quiet, but he was spoken gently,” she said. “I thought he was very cool. I thought he was such a great person. He gave it so much. So I’ll accept all of us.”

Nikki quit her job as a cocktail waitress and became a mom at home, Chloe said. The couple had four children.

Tyler and Nicky’s relationship seemed to get worse by then, Chloe said. Nikki suspected that Tyler was cheating on her.

However, she always returned to their Happy Valley House until the winter of 2023.

According to Sheriff’s report and Chloe, on November 29, 2023, just a few months before Nikki went missing in May 2024, she and Tyler became one of their biggest fights.

It was unclear how the fight began, but according to a sheriff’s report filmed after an interview with Nikki in the hospital, Tyler went home that night in a “strange mood” and quickly flew to Nikki in his bedroom. She told the sheriff’s deputies she thought he was using methamphetamine.

Tyler dragged her around the room with a “scary expression glazed in his eyes, as if he had some kind of mental episode,” wrote Deputy Jerry Mall.

Nikki tried to calm her husband down, but he began slapsing him in the face, Mall writes. According to reports, he pulled her hair, poured cold water over her, and tied her arms and legs with white duct tape.

During the attack, Nikki tells the sheriff’s deputies that Tyler is a gong to kill her.

“She thought she was going to die,” the aide wrote in the report.

The attack lasted for several hours and Nikki was able to finally get away while Tyler was in the kitchen, Mall wrote.

She went to her mother’s house and then to Chloe’s house, her sister said.

“She said he wasn’t falling down his arm well. She was able to get out of it in the end,” Chloe recalled, reflecting her claims in the report.

She was hospitalized and reported the incident to the sheriff’s office, where Tyler was later arrested and charged with physical injuries to her spouse, false imprisonment, threat of criminality and assault.

Nikki continued to live with her sister and began divorce proceedings as the trial passed through the courthouse, Chloe said. A restraining order was introduced and the couple didn’t speak for months, Chloe said.

“The first few months she stayed strong. There was a moment when Tyler asked her to come back and he said he would change. She would stay at his house, but she would come back after me and stay at my mother’s house,” Chloe said.

Around March 2024, she began staying more at Tyler’s house on Orinda Road, Chloe said.

Then, on May 18th, Nikki disappeared.

She texted Chloe the whole day after Tyler’s family emergency. The next morning, Chloe texted her sister about the emergency. There was no response. A little later, Chloe asked about Nikki’s daughter’s soccer uniform. There is no response. Messages sent to Nikki’s iPhone were displayed on Green on Chloe’s mobile phone. This means that her iPhone had been turned off or stopped service.
The next day, Chloe said Tyler had texted her.

“Have you spoke to Nicky before? I think she’s missing.”

It had been a few days before Chloe and her family were really worried. Four days after she was last asked, the family reported that she had gone missing.

Time passed and Nikki’s 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche Truck was found, but Nikki was not.

Her disappearance had an almost immediate effect on the domestic violence incident against Tyler. All charges against him have been dropped.

“Her presence at this point is necessary to move the case forward,” the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office said when it dropped the charges in July. “As mentioned earlier in court, the DA’s office has exhausted all its measures to prove the case without her at this time. The DA’s office reserves all rights to refill this case in the future.”

Saelee-McCain’s loss disappearance was not the first Reading missing person case to bring a small city into a national conversation. In 2016, a woman named Sherri Papini disappeared. She claimed that after going missing for 22 days, she was hurt and debilitated her home and was lured by two Latino people. However, years after she returned to Reading, federal prosecutors accused Papini of making up for the entire story. She eventually pleaded guilty to the case.

There are currently 90,000 cities in the Saelee-McCain case.

Going anywhere in the city and county is a reminder of the loss of Saelee-McCain. People talk about the incident in cafes and see it on a bumper sticker saying “#justicefornikkicheng.”

“It’s going to be hard to know about this incident,” said Sean Schwarer, a professor in the history department in Chico and a journalist who writes the local outlet A-News Café. “It’s a kind of cultural touchstone.”

Local residents have gathered through Saelee-McCain’s lost bean, whether they are a Facebook group dedicated to investigating cases or whether they are focused on investigating physical searches. Schwarmer said.

“What’s interesting about Nikki’s case is that people on different aspects of the political spectrum are united. People are united in search of Nikki,” he said.

The absence of the search squad is McCain, despite being attacked by protesters via his wife’s loss beauts and not being accused of losing him at home.

In a video recorded at a court hearing for another case involving McCain, the protesters confront him and his mother outside the courtroom while walking to him and his car.

“There’s no justice or peace while Tyler is on the street,” protesters cried, recording McCain. “Where is she in Tyler? Where is Nicky?”

“What did you guys do with her?” asks another woman.

Four days after the press conference that McCain spoke, there were two major updates to the Saelee-McCain incident.

The neighbor woke up on the morning of March 14th, according to a sheriff’s report. The FBI agents were bagged and evidence was taken from the house.

Law enforcement then made another big announcement.

“The information learned from the interviews based on the evidence collected, and the fact that none of Nikki’s family members have heard from Nikki since May 18, 2024, determines that detectives were victims of the murder,” the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The news confirmed that many people already suspected. However, the mystery of what happened remained.
