California has many great wine growing regions, one of which has been named the best region in the country. No, it does not have a grand position equivalent to the French wine name. Starting just north of San Francisco, it is between the Swissun Valley, between San Francisco and Sacramento. (If you’re wondering, it’s pronounced “suh-soon.” It’s so long and underrated, so it was named the best wine region by USA Today.

Like its more famous neighbours, Swissun Valley is the perfect condition for warm days and cool nights and growing a variety of varieties. Nearby Sao Pablo Bay and Swissun Bay bring wind from early summer to autumn, with little frost risk. It borders the mountains in the east and west.
It includes rustic scenery, crowds with fewer crowds than some famous wine areas, various tasting rooms (Victorian mansions, medieval modern spots, tasting rooms covered in 90-year-old Ivy), and most importantly, affordable wines. Swiss Valley is known as the “capital of the world’s petite syrah,” but it cultivates over 20 other varieties. Other strong wines known in the region are Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Grenache and Chardonnay.
Suisun Valley Ava (which is an American viticulture region) is located in Solano County, a 6.5-hour drive in Angelenos (this is 30 minutes less than NAPA). Along with Napa Valley Ava, it is part of the North Coast AVA, allowing winemakers from within the AVA’s six counties to blend grapes called North Coast wine. On land, Swissun Valley is 3 miles x 8 miles, about 20% of which are currently planted. The wine has been made here since 1860 and is one of the state’s oldest wine regions (the oldest is Madera County, near Yosemite).
USA Today readers appreciated Suisun’s appeal and “commitment to the community.” This included developing agritourism with farm stands and events such as concert series, as well as cooperatives to help small winemakers pool their resources.
