NASA spent more than $13 million on DEI under Biden, but key agency work has flapped up

NASA “Athena” Lander is set to land on the surface of the moon

Senior Fox News correspondent Jonathan Cerry joins “Faulkner Focus” to discuss NASA’s Moonlander descending towards the moon and isolated astronauts who have denied claims that politics played a role in his search delays.

According to a new report from WatchDog Group Openthebooks, NASA issues have increased under former President Joe Biden, but space agencies have prioritized embedding diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives into the workforce.

In preparation for the Starliner Capsule Mission, the two astronauts eventually failed, leaving them left in space, but NASA spent more than $13 million on related efforts between 2021 and 2024. Amid the ongoing Starliner spacecraft fiasco, the Inspector’s general report highlighted even further absences by agencies that return duties relating to quality efforts, particularly those related to NASA efforts.

At the same time, while NASA faced these mission-critical flaws, it also reportedly took substantial steps to incorporate DEI into agency practices through a variety of measures, including grants, contracts, employee guidance, agency-wide strategic equity commitments, and book talks.

New research reveals the “amazing” range of how much Day has been injected into the government under Biden

During President Donald Trump’s first term, he sought to eradicate the federal government’s DEI program, as well as his efforts today. Before ending his first term in September 2020, Trump signed an executive order to combat race and gender stereotypes within the federal government program. His order was revoked by the Biden administration a few months later. During former President Joe Biden’s first days, he signed several executive orders aimed at embedding fair considerations Trump was trying to remove in his federal program.

According to a new report from WatchDog Group Openthebooks, issues at NASA were in harmony under Joe Biden, but space agencies continued to incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives into their workforce.

Following Biden’s directive, NASA has done its best to incorporate these principles into daily operations, an Openthebooks report shows. At the same time, NASA had prepared Starliner capsules to transport two astronauts to the International Space Station for what was intended to be a week-long mission. Instead, astronauts were left in space for several months due to multiple malfunctions using the rockets that carried them there. Elon Musk’s SpaceX is expected to be tapped to help bring astronauts home and will return within this month.

In 2021, the same year NASA Starliner capsule had undergone a test flight, and NASA employees were “engaged in a book talk about Open.”[ing] “Along with author Uju Sea Lyca, who was invited the following year, the anti-racism communication line spoke to NASA parents about her book, “How to Raise a Kind Child in a Prejudicated World,” in British Colonies that lament her book “Eurocentric” education,” which includes “How to Raise a Kind Child in a Prejudicated World.” Anti-racist scholar Ibram X. Kendy.

Around the same time Asika discussed with NASA employees, the agency also announced the 2022-2026 Strategic Plan on Diversity, Equity Inclusion and Accessibility. Key goals of the plan include race- and gender-based employment and promotion initiatives. That same year, NASA announced its 2022 equity action plan. This included a new DEI-related contractor policy. These policies included, among other things, “requirements for contractors to provide DEIA plans to demonstrate their commitment to employee diversification.” The Equity Action Plan also revamped NASA’s grant and procurement process. This aims to encourage grant proponents to consider the DEI principles, even if they become seemingly unrelated.

In 2022, employees were also provided guidance “to support gender transition/affirmation in the workplace.” This guidance encouraged employees to be “motivated and available to work with transitional employees on the development, implementation and evolution of workplace gender.” “Transferring employees” added that they are permitted to use toilets, locker rooms or other facilities of their choice and are not forced to use anything that does not match those chosen.

According to Openthebooks, NASA has spent at least $13 million on DEI-related programs under Biden. One contract revealed by the organization provided NASA with more than $2.3 million to consulting groups to support ‘diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility’ in culture and business.

“NASA’s mission is too dangerous to be distracted by identity politics,” said John Hart, CEO of Openthebooks.

“Newton’s physics and air re-entry doesn’t bother meritocratic talks or gender ‘positive’ policies,” Hart added. “NASA has the opportunity to take one small step towards financial responsibility and make a big leap into common sense.”

Beyond the Starliner mission fiasco, where two astronauts were left behind in space, a report from General Inspector last year detailed NASA’s widespread quality control issues and the efforts of contractor Boeing to bring astronauts back to the moon. The report noted that workers in NASA’s Space Launch Systems Program have not had enough experience among other issues.

This week, the Trump administration began “stage-cutting” at NASA. This included closing the institutional diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility branch in the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity.

NASA manager Janet Petro said in a note to NASA employees this week that cutting troops, including the closure of multiple offices, meant “difficult adjustments,” but agents view it as “restructuring” and “doing what’s legally necessary.”

“NASA is committed to promoting innovation and captivating the best talent to achieve our mission for all its benefits,” NASA spokesperson Cheryl Warner told Fox News Digital when reaching the comments. “As new guidance emerges, we are working to comply with the new requirements in a timely manner. Our agency is adhering to the requirements of the executive order and additional guidance from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.”
