National security guards deployed in Los Angeles have the authority to temporarily detain anti-ice riots in Los Angeles, the Department of Homeland Security said.
President Donald Trump deployed around 4,000 national security guards in the cities as the riots continued, but Major General Scott Sherman said Wednesday there were only a handful of cases where they had detained civilians.
DHS Deputy Director Tricia McLaughlin says the military is on the ground to protect ice agents and other federal law enforcement groups.
“If an ice law enforcement officer is attacked, the military personnel have the authority to temporarily detain until law enforcement arrests them,” McLaughlin told Axios in a statement.
Newsom files a move to stop an emergency motion to use the military to “block” the army.

Sherman told The Associated Press Wednesday that about 500 National Guard troops have been trained to date to help agents implement immigration operations in Los Angeles.
Immigration officers have already circulated photos of National Guard soldiers providing security to Department of Homeland Security agents.

He told the Associated Press that for the past few days, National Guard soldiers temporarily detained anti-ice protesters, but not much has happened as things have settled down.
Sherman also said the soldiers did not participate in arrests or law enforcement activities. Instead, he added that when police took them into custody, they let the agitators go.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has entered into a public feud with the Trump administration, accusing the state’s National Guard of “illegal” and “instructing” 2,000 state guard members of “illegal” without consulting with California law enforcement leaders.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration said the ICE operation “sought to attract criminal illegal immigrant killers, rapists, gang rapes, drug dealers, human traffickers and domestic abusers on the streets.
